Canadian crooner Tory Lanez, released his highly anticipated Chixtape 5 this past week and it’s honestly got me wishing I still had some of favorite Baby Phat threads to rock while listening to this early 2000s inspired project.
With a star studded line up in the feature department including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Chris Brown, T-Pain and plenty more, there is no shortage of classic samples on this album that will transport you to the good ol’ days of when R&B and Hip-Hop was actually good.
Great at putting his own stamp on samples and making them his own, Lanez not only flipped popular hits such as Snoop Dogg’s- Beautiful (Beauty & The Benz), Chris Brown’s- Take You Down (The Take), Fabolous’ -Can’t Let You Go (If You Gotta…), Trey Songz’- Can’t Help But Wait (Still Waiting), T-Pain’s – I’m Sprung ( Jerry Sprunger)-just to name a few-but he actually had the artist themselves hop on the tracks with him and that’s honestly a boss move if I’ve ever seen one! To be able to create with those that have inspired you on your journey has got to be one of the best feelings and the fact that Tory was able to get the clearance for the samples used plus collab with those very artists is dope AF.
Can we also take a moment to appreciate the cover of Chixtape 5? Ashanti, who is not only featured on the track titled “A Fools Tape” which samples her hit “Foolish,” but baby girl is also featured on the cover where she’s seen potentially texting her boo on her T-Mobile Side Kick in a room with celeb posters all over the wall which really ties the whole nostalgic vibes of the 2000s together. Also, shout out to Lanez and his team for turning Chixtape.com into a MySpace page, they really thought of it all!
Overall, I’d say this 5th installment of Chixtape is a solid body of work and I am here for all of the detail-oriented creativity!
Have you taken a listen to Chixtape 5 yet?!
