Alright now, if we’re going to be talking about “staying woke” then Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino is the most WOKE individual in America right now.
It’s only been a few days since Childish release the video for his latest single “This Is America” and I’m still shook! This is the first taste of music we’ve gotten from the artist since his 2016 album Awaken, My Love! and he came out guns blazing (literally.)
At first watch, you see Gambino dancing around in an empty warehouse with a couple of kids in school uniforms but then flips the switch and shoots down a choir and ends the video running away from people. Honestly, the first time I watched it I was so entertained with his dancing and quirky faces that I didn’t even realize what was going on in the background which was precisely the point of this video. In one of the scenes if you take notice, Childish is dancing with the kids but in the background there is a dark figure riding a white horse that is being chased by a cop car. Not positive if she was the first to point this out but Karen Civil tweeted a clip from the scene with the Revelation 6:8 verse “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death and Hell followed with him.”
After I saw her tweet that, I immediately went back to watch the video again and started noticing all the chaos that was actually going on in the background and I’m just in awe in the genius of this Hiro Murai directed video.
This video clearly represents the short attention span that not only the news outlets have but us as individuals have as well. One moment a huge political issue or world event happens and we’re wrapped up in it for maybe a week or so then something else pops up and we forget about it just like that. This is undoubtedly a sensitive subject but Childish Gambino really did a phenomenal job putting into perspective the oppression the Black Community in America faces. People will take notice of all of the entertainment aspects the culture has to offer but will completely disregard the real struggles they deal with on the daily.

Someone else said it, “Gambino is doing what Kanye thinks he’s doing,” and I couldn’t agree more. As an artist, you have a tremendous amount of influence on your fans and in my opinion I believe that yes, you do have a responsibility on how you express your opinions. I don’t want to compare Kanye and Donald Glover but it’s almost hard not to. Kanye has gone off trying to express his beliefs but right now people are only talking about how crazy he sounds-Gambino looks crazy in his video but the way he portrayed what the real issue is in America is so on point that that’s all people are talking about and it’s what people SHOULD be talking about. #STAYWOKE
