With the 808s still beating heavy in my head, Kendrick Lamar’s fourth studio album, DAMN, is nothing short of a Hip Hop masterpiece.
With limited features coming from Rihanna, Zacari and U2, this 14 track contribution is laced with joints that BANG!
Lamar intensified the anticipation for the release of DAMN by dropping the Mike Will Made-It produced single “HUMBLE” along with its FIRE visual and as hes proven before he backs up the hype and then some.
I’ve allowed myself the weekend to fully process this body of work and K.Dot definitely got it right by titling it DAMN because GAHDAMN he never ceases to amaze me. From the lyrical content to the passionate delivery on every cut, King Kendrick has the confidence of a million men and has earned the privilege to wear Rap’s crown as one of the greatest to ever do it.
Although it should be listened to in its entirety, I do have my stand outs from this album such as “DNA,” “ELEMENT,” “LOYALTY” ft. Rihanna, “HUMBLE,” “FEAR,” and my personal favorite “LOVE” ft. Zacari.
LOVE FT. ZACARI
“I’m on the way
We ain’t got no time to waste
Poppin’ your gum on the way
Am I in the way?
I don’t wan’ pressure you none
I want your blessing today
Oh, by the way, open the door by the way
Told you that I’m on the way
I’m on the way, I know connection is vague
Pick up the phone for me, babe
Damn it, we jammin’
Bad attitude from yo’ nanny
Curves and your hips from yo’ mammy
Remember Gardena, I took the studio camry
I know Top will be mad at me
I had to do it, I want your body, your music
I bought the big one to prove it
Look what you made
Told you that I’m on the way
I’m like an exit away, yep
If I didn’t ride blade on curb, would you still love me?
If I minimize my net worth, would you still love me?
Keep it a hundred, I’d rather you trust me than to love me
Keep it a whole one hund’: don’t got you, I got nothin’
Give me a run for my money
There is nobody, no one to outrun me
So give me a run for my money
Sippin’ bubbly, feelin’ lovely, livin’ lovely
Just love me
I wanna be with you, ayy, I wanna be with
I wanna be with you, ayy, I wanna be with
I wanna be with you”
Kung Fu Kenny “doesn’t do it for the gram he does it for Compton” and I believe the fact that he’s so unapologetically himself is what makes him so untouchable.
If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t already then go ahead and take a personal day to take a listen to Kendrick Lamar’s latest soon to be classic DAMN.
